The number of Finnish patent applications remained on level in 2009
The number of Finnish patent applications filed by enterprises and associations remained on level in 2009 compared to the previous year. According to Statistics Finland the total number of applied patents was 1,931. In year 2008 a total of 1,946 applications were filed in Finland.
The majority of the Finnish patent applications originated in 2009 from enterprises and associations (1,403 applications). Only 127 Finnish patent applications were filed in 2009 by foreign applicants. Due to increased international filing the number of foreign applications in Finland has been decreasing in recent years.
Most active sector to file Finnish patent applications in 2009 was metal and machinery industry where a total of 129 companies filed 510 new patent applications. The biggest growth in the number of patent applications was in the field of wholesale, retail and research and development. The number of applications decreased in forestry and information industry.
The number of granted patents decreased in Finland
Enterprises and associations were granted a total of 647 patents in 2009. Year 2008 the number was 668. Most patents were granted in metal and machinery industry.
In addition to domestic patents there were a total of 4,497 European patents enforced in Finland. Biggest numbers of patents were granted in the fields of chemistry, metallurgy and basic goods.
