The number of EP filings on the rise

The European Patent Office received 232 000 European patent filings in 2010, which was 10% more than in the previous year.

39% of these filings originated from the 38 member states of the European Patent Organization, 26% from the US and 18% from Japan. South Korea and China were each the origin in 5% of the filings.

In 2010 the EPO granted 58 100 patents, which was 11% more than in 2009.

According to the President of the EPO, Mr. Battistelli, these figures indicate that the demand for patent protection is on the rise again. The EPO expects a further increase for the current year.
