Proposal to register fi-domain names for maximum of 5 years
The Finnish Government proposes that the maximum duration of the Finnish fi-domain names be expanded to five years. The five-year duration would also concern renewal of an already granted domain name. The proposition has been announced on 19 March 2009. For the time being, fi-domain names can be registered for either one or three years at a time.
Quarantine time also to change
The current 3-month quarantine time is also proposed to shorten to one month. After the amendment, the praxis to remove an expired domain name would be in line with that of other countries.
Record amount of fi-domain names
The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority issued 4130 new fi-domain names in February 2009. One of the reasons for the peak in registrations is the recent amendment in January 2009, allowing a one-year registration of fi-domain names. In February, almost 40% of fi-domain name registrations were made for one year only. If a domain name is required, for instance, for the duration of an advertisement campaign, a short registration period is founded, and it also lowers costs.
