Time limits for response to Office Actions concerning trademarks shortened from January 1, 2008
The National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland will expedite the processing of trademark applications.
As from the beginning of 2008, the time limit for responding to an Office Action concerning a trademark application will be shortened from the current 16 weeks to eight weeks. In Office
Actions relating to formal matters, the time limit for response can be even shorter, however, at least four weeks.
The time limits for response in notices of refusal in connection with international registrations are shortened to 12 weeks. The shortening of response terms also applies to opposition
cases.
It is still possible to obtain an extension of time limit. The extension of time corresponds to the time limit granted in the Office Action. The first extension is granted without a
statement of reasons, the subsequent extensions are granted only for justified reasons. A fee is charged for extension of time limit.
The changes will go into effect on January 1, 2008, and they also apply to applications filed prior to this date.
