Finnish fi-domain names may soon be registered for up to five years

The amendment of the Finnish Domain Name Act will enter into force on 1 September 2009 and allow users to register fi-domain names for one, three or five years at a time. The maximum validity period of five years will also apply to renewal of already granted domain names.

The quarantine period will be shortened

The current 3-month quarantine period will be shortened to one month. During this period, domain names cannot be registered to a new holder, but after the period, they become available to anyone. A quarantine period will follow the termination, revocation or expiration of a domain name.

Thousands of domain names are due to expire

According to the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority, approximately 52 000 fi-domain names are due to expire at the turn of August and September 2009. The right to use a domain name expires unless the domain name is renewed before the end of the validity period. Domain names become available for other applicants after the one-month quarantine has passed.
