Domain and DNS

What is a domain name?

Domain name is a hostname registered to a certain IP address. IP address is a series of numbers which identify machines between each other so that they can communicate. Long series of numbers are usually more difficult to remember than names. A human-readable name may also reflect a company, brand or service.

What is the Domain Name System?

The Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet is like a phonebook that contains registered domain names and associated IP addresses. DNS contains also other details like the name and IP address of a company mail server that can accept email for the company's domain. In other words, DNS provides a worldwide redirection service. The Domain Name System is an essential component of the Internet.
